About Upper GI Endoscopy (EGD)

Upper GI Endoscopy (Esophagogastroduodenoscopy or EGD) allows doctors to look directly at the mucosal lining of the esophagus (food pipe), stomach, and upper small intestine (duodenum).

An endoscope—a thin, long, flexible tube equipped with a high-definition digital camera and bright light—is passed gently through the mouth into the stomach.

This procedure enables our senior gastroenterologist Dr. Gursewak Singh to inspect the digestive lining for ulcers, acid reflux inflammation, infection, bleeding sites, or early cancer lesions.

If necessary, painless microscopic biopsy samples are collected during the examination using tiny specialized forceps passed through the scope.

Key Patient Benefits

Direct high-definition visual examination of upper digestive mucosa
Painless tissue biopsy collection without surgery
Identifies ulcers, H. pylori infection, acid reflux, and early tumors
Outpatient procedure with fast recovery

Patient Preparation Instructions

1

Strict fasting: Have nothing to eat or drink for at least 6 hours prior to the procedure to keep the stomach empty.

2

Inform your doctor about any regular medications (especially blood thinners or diabetes medicines).

3

Sign the informed consent form after discussing the test details with the clinical team.

4

Remove false teeth, dentures, or mouth jewelry before the examination.

Post-Procedure Care & Discharge Guidelines

Wait for throat numbness to wear off (usually 1 hour) before eating or drinking.
Avoid driving a vehicle, operating machinery, or consuming alcohol for the rest of the day if sedation was administered.
Rest quietly at home; mild throat soreness or feeling slightly bloated will pass naturally without medication.
When do I know the results?Visual results are discussed immediately after the test. Biopsy lab analysis reports are ready in 2 to 3 days.
